Cat & Dog Behavioural Counselling

Nobody wants a misbehaved pet; we can curate the best training plan for them!

Because our pets cannot raise their paws and tell us when something is wrong, we as owners need to know what to watch for to know when they are ill. When a pet is misbehaving for an extended period of time, then your pet may either have an underlying issue or is simply displaying disruptive behaviours caused by anxiety. If this appears to be your pet, then it is advised to book an appointment with us at 403-342-5200.

Can I train my pet at home?

Sometimes you can teach a pet to form positive associations with something they consider unpleasant. For example, during a thunderstorm, do not cater to your pet's fear with any “poor baby” talk. Instead, consistently bring out a special treat they love, turn on music or the TV to distract them from alarming noises, play with them, and act normally. However, if there are no improvements, we recommend behavioural counselling with a trained professional.

What is behavioural counselling?

During the initial conversation, our veterinarian will examine your pet and determine the underlying issue. From there, they will decide on the best form of therapy for your furry companion. They may suggest group classes or private lessons. Group classes will be more beneficial for your pet if they have an issue with socialization. Private lessons are necessary if your pet has a specific behaviour problem, such as inappropriate urination, aggression, or separation anxiety. Medication may be recommended in extreme cases.

What are some behaviours that indicate a need for counselling?

If your pet's actions are putting others or themselves in danger. Some common behaviours to look out for include:

  • Inappropriate urination
  • Pacing or separation anxiety
  • Aggression
  • Destructive chewing
  • Loss of appetite
